High turnover and low retention of direct-care staff in long-term care undermine the quality of service and life for consumers and the quality of jobs for workers. Unnecessary turnover wastes limited and desperately needed resources. To turn around this dynamic, which is so common that it is taken for granted, long-term care organizations need to conduct a comprehensive scan of their workforce retention processes and use a step-by-step approach to transforming their cultures. Twelve Steps for Creating a Culture of Retention: A Workbook for Home and Community-Based Long-Term Care Providers presents questions to guide readers through the steps, along with case studies, sample tools, and references to additional resources. The workbook addresses  a range of topics, including management information and oversight systems, recruitment and selection processes, orientation and support for new employees, training and career ladders, communication and supervisor practices, and employee engagement in continuous improvement.
